An elf wizard is one of those classic DnD tropes that dates back to the earliest editions. High elves in particular were the "default" race for wizards in the core rules. But with Intelligence increases available on any race, the High Elf is no longer just "the one you pick for wizards", and strangely it's probably not the best elf.
